"An Outing to Remember” is dedicated to the memory of
Dr. Lisa Ann Thompson, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend, doctor, and caregiver. Lisa possessed a real zest for life, accompanied
by her great sense of humor. Her ability to give, rather than take, was unconditional and boundless. As a pediatrician, Dr. Lisa was a brilliant and
compassionate practitioner.
In 1999, Lisa and her family’s life changed forever. In a split second, a trip
to Bermuda turned into a living nightmare. Lisa was seriously injured
in a motor scooter accident, almost losing a leg and suffering a brain injury.
For several months, it was “touch and go,” but Lisa’s determination to live
was more powerful.
All of us wanted Lisa to regain her ability to walk, talk, and be a mother to
her four daughters. But because of her traumatic brain injury, the doctors
told Lisa she would never practice medicine again. For Lisa, this was an
unacceptable prognosis, and she began taking classes at Riley Hospital. Fifteen months later, Lisa returned to her
practice because she knew her patients and co-workers needed her as much as she needed them.
As the years passed, the severe brain injury Lisa experienced lessened her ability to function in the same emotional
capacity that she had known before. As a result, she found she could not meet all the demands she felt she needed to
accomplish. Today’s golf outing is a testament to Dr. Lisa’s short, but extraordinary life.
In memory of Dr. Lisa Ann Thompson, we sincerely thank you for your participation and donation, which will go to the
Dr. Lisa Thompson Center for Family Education. Your donation will help to pass Lisa’s torch of possibilities that she
courageously illuminated for brain injury patients to come out of the darkness and into the light.

The mission of the Dr. Lisa Thompson Center for Family Education at RHI is to assist families of traumatic
brain injury (TBI) patients by providing education, community resources, stress management
training, and social support. The Center was founded especially to help the individual and their families better
adjust after hospitalization, and improve long-term outcome. Through this program, RHI offers a unique and
internationally-recognized program for people with brain injuries and their families.
According to James D. Graham, Executive Director of the RHI Foundation,
“The program has made great strides in four years. To date, we have received over $1,300,000 in federal and state
grants for research and for the development of new clinical treatments for people with brain injury. Additionally, the
Center has attracted professional researchers and provided valuable training to aspiring externs.
Over 100 patients and their ‘caregivers’ (families) have benefitted from services provided by the Center. I think all
who were present at the 2009 golf outing dinner were touched by Rachel Scholz and her statement that she
and her family wouldn’t have made it without the TBI Coping Skills Program. The annual golf outing will help
us continue to build the program as well as raise funds to provide care for people whose insurance fails to cover services
that promote long-term adjustment and family well-being.”
